At the HMC Conference in Cologne, May 12-14, 2025

From May 12 to 14, the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration (HMC) hosted its first in-person conference in Cologne, featuring inspiring keynotes, engaging talks, and lively discussions.

Simon Hodson’s keynote on “What is FAIR for?” emphasized the need for understanding the interplay of AI-ready data, enhanced metadata, and generative metadata to drive interdisciplinary research.

A highlight was Till Korten’s keynote from Helmholtz AI on the importance of data management for machine learning, a key topic for Helmholtz Imaging’s planned Data Curation Unit as well as all HFMI projects.

Engaging discussions also covered automated metadata publication using open-source tools, paving the way for more accessible, high-quality data sharing. This was followed by insightful conversations on how Helmholtz Imaging can support imaging data generators in producing and maintaining better, FAIR-compliant metadata. In particular, the benefits of recommendations for databases and other tools were discussed. We also brainstormed scientific image databank requirements, explored available options, and had lively exchanges at our booth on HMC’s impact on imaging.

The second day concluded with a beautiful riverboat cruise on the Rhine, enjoying the sunset and reflecting on the insights gained.
