Three New Members Join the Helmholtz Imaging Steering Board

Apl. Prof. Dr. Ralf Mikut, Head of Research Area Automated Image and Data Analysis at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, joins the board as representative of the Research Field Energy. His research combines machine learning, image and signal analysis, and interactive visual analytics for scientific applications. A particular focus of his work lies on AI-supported analysis of imaging and multimodal data, including biomedical imaging, microscopy and the automated interpretation of complex visual information in engineering and life sciences.

Ralf has been connected to Helmholtz Imaging since its early development phase. Through his involvement in Helmholtz-wide strategic activities, he brings extensive experience in collaborative and cross-disciplinary initiatives. He has also contributed to Helmholtz Imaging as PI of several Helmholtz Imaging projects and therefore knows the platform both strategically and from hands-on collaboration.

Dr Katharina Nöh, Head of Modeling of Biochemical Networks and Cells and Vice Head of Modeling and Simulation at Forschungszentrum Jülich, joins the Steering Board as representative of the Research Field Information. Her work focuses on computational methods for analyzing complex biochemical networks and cellular processes at the intersection of applied mathematics, statistics, data science and computational engineering. Her research interests include metabolic flux analysis, systems biology, single-cell imaging, explainable and Bayesian modelling approaches, as well as AI-supported analysis of microbial imaging data.

Katharina has been involved in Helmholtz Imaging almost from the very beginning as PI of several Helmholtz Imaging projects. Through her long-standing engagement, she brings valuable experience in interdisciplinary collaboration within Helmholtz and a strong understanding of both the opportunities and challenges connected to cross-center initiatives.

Prof Dr Jian Peng, Head of the Department of Remote Sensing at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) and Professor for Hydrology and Remote Sensing at Leipzig University, joins the Steering Board as representative of the Research Field Environment. His research focuses on satellite remote sensing of the water cycle, land-surface hydrology, process-based modelling and data-driven methods, with a particular interest in hydrological and climate extremes and their impacts on ecosystems.

With his expertise Jian brings an important perspective on imaging and data-driven research in environmental sciences to Helmholtz Imaging. Jian is also involved in the ongoing development of Helmholtz Imaging activities around data curation. Together with colleagues from across the platform, he contributes to shaping structures that address key challenges related to data curation, data management and the sustainable use of scientific imaging data within the Helmholtz Association.
