DESY is offering the following job position as postdoctoral researcher for the project Smart Phase in the frame of Helmholtz lmaging:

Remuneration Group 13 | Limited: 1 year (DESY) + 1 year (Hereon) | Starting date: 01.12.2022

DESY, with more than 2700 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world’s leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

DESY is hiring a postdoctoral researcher for the project Smart Phase in the frame of Helmholtz lmaging. Your position will be located at the DESY Campus in Hamburg to advance capabilities for phase retrieval for X-Ray Nano tomography. You will work at the interface of theoretical and experimental physics to improve the in situ nanoimaging of biodegradable magnesium bone implants. As such, you will collaborate with researchers of the X -Ray Nanoscience and X-Ray Optics group at DESY, and the Institutes of Metallic Biomaterials and Materials Physics at Hereon. The position has a limited duration of 2 years, you will be formally hired 1 year by DESY and the other by Hereon. DESY is looking for a motivated candidate who enjoys interdisciplinary work.

About your role:

  • Implementation and validation of new phase retrieval algorithms for propagation-based phase-contrast nano imaging with hard X-Rays
  • Implementation and testing of the framework in the experimental control system
  • Participation in beamtimes at the PETRA III instruments related to the project and support of other scientists in application of phase retrieval algorithms
  • Coordination with other project partners

Good reasons to join:

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. DESY attaches particular importance to appreciative cooperation and the well-being of their employees. Gender equality is an important aspect for them. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a job ticket.

About you:

  • PhD in physics, mathematics or similar discipline
  • Programming skills (preferably Python)
  • Knowledge of inverse problems, ideally phase retrieval
  • Experience in carrying out microscopy experiments with (coherent) X-Rays is a plus
  • Team spirit, pro-active attitude, good communication skills and the ability to work efficiently in an interdisciplinary team
