We are proud to announce that Dagmar Kainmueller, spokesperson for Helmholtz Imaging, has been recognized as one of the “100 most important minds in Berlin’s science” by Der Tagesspiegel.

Dagmar leads the Helmholtz Imaging Research Unit at MDC. Her team pursues theoretical advances in machine learning and combinatorial optimization to solve challenging problems across the imaging pipeline, including image stitching, multi-modal image matching across scales, as well as leveraging prior knowledge in image analysis problems. Furthermore, her group investigates methodological and infrastructural advances for large-scale imaging workflows.

As part of the Helmholtz Foundation Model Initiative (HFMI), Dagmar plays an important role in two major projects:

  • AqQua: This project leverages AI and high-performance computing to analyze global plankton image data, aiming to improve our understanding of aquatic ecosystems and their role in climate regulation. As co-spokesperson, Dagmar is committed to advancing operational global monitoring of plankton biodiversity and carbon export.
  • Synergy Unit: Co-initiated by Dagmar, this initiative works to develop principles for AI model creation and application across research domains. The unit also focuses on knowledge sharing and community building to ensure lasting impact.

Dagmar’s leadership in Helmholtz Imaging and her contributions to the HFMI Initiative demonstrate her dedication to advancing science and technology. Congratulations to Dagmar on this well-deserved recognition!
